Ode to a Cherokee

I look at him with envy
wishing I could like him be,
a man who has the heart and mind
of a noble Cherokee.

His stick-straight hair and high cheek bones
And somewhat reddish skin
suggest a Native heritage
of brave undaunted men.

Some see him as repugnant
since he doesn't fit the mold,
for his spirit is unconquerable
and will not be controlled.

He's a man of quiet demeanor
who hasn't much to say;
ever choosing his words wisely,
true to self, he will not stray.

Yes, I look at him with envy
wishing I could like him be,
a man who has the heart and mind
of a noble Cherokee.
